THE removal of a ‘frustrating’ ‘s-shaped chicane will help combat road rage, according to a councillor.

Cllr Shah Hussain, who represents Daneshouse and Stoneyholme on Burnley Council, said the junction of Brougham Street and Folds Street in the town would be altered after a long campaign to get it changed.

It was built more than 25-years-ago by the borough authority, which was in charge of highway at the time, to slow down traffic.

However it is believed the junction causes people to argue about who has priority on the road.

Lancashire County Council highways boss Cllr John Fillis said the chicane would be replaced with a flattop speed bump, with work set to take place on Monday.

Cllr Hussain said the road was long overdue a change after several residents contacted him and County Councillor Sobia Malik about the issue.

He said: “We were told there was an increasing amount of road rage at the chicane as a result of drivers were not giving way to each other.

“This causes frustration and has led to motorists arguing, which is something we don’t want.

“I’m pleased the road will be changed and I’m pleased the county council have listened to Sobia and residents about the issue and has responded accordingly.

“Another traffic calming measure is set to replace it.

Brougham Street leads onto Princess Way and provides quick access to junction 11 of the Colne-bound M65 for drivers travelling from Colne Road.

Work is set to start on Monday and will take around three weeks to complete.

A county council spokesman said around £55,000 from the priority neighbourhoods fund will be spent on installing the speed bump.

County Cllr Fillis said a further two chicanes in Daneshouse Road, which follows onto Brougham Street, will be looked at.

He said: “When the chicanes were installed 25-years-ago they were great.

“They helped slow the traffic down and prevented speeding.

“However with the increase of cars on the road it causes a position of conflict between both drivers coming from each side.

“We are now going to look at two further chicanes.”
