A MAN who tried to calm the situation when he came across a dispute in the grounds of Blackburn Cathedral ended up being struck with the buckle end of a belt.

Blackburn magistrates heard the victim chased Derek Arthur Taylor through The Mall shopping centre with blood pouring from a cut above his eye.

Taylor, 56, of Ripon Street, Blackburn, was convicted after trial of assaulting Muhammad Ahmed causing him actual bodily harm.

He was jailed for 18 weeks and ordered to pay his victim £600 compensation.

The court heard Mr Ahmed was walking through the Cathedral Grounds when he came across two men and a woman arguing with some teenagers.

He tried to calm the situation but Taylor responded by removing his belt, wrapping it around his right hand and striking Mr Ahmed with the buckle end.

Mr Ahmed felt instant pain and blood started running down his face from a two inch cut.

He gave chase to Taylor who was detained by security staff in The Mall.
