CALLS have been made for Burnley folk to volunteer for a project to help with vital building work in Africa.

Burnley FC in the Community will be travelling to Ghana in October to continue the work they have been carrying out in the village of Woe since 2014.

This is the third time the group will be travelling to the area with volunteer travel organisation African Adventures.

The group will be looking to continue the building work the group started at the Dezidi Primary School.

Volunteers are wanted to come along and help in the completing the school’s new two storey brick classroom block.

Siobhán McNamara, marketing and partnerships manager at Burnley FC in the Community, said: “I took the trip to Ghana in 2015 with Burnley FC in the Community and can without hesitation say it was a truly amazing experience.

“It was great to see the tangible results of our building work after a week, while also knowing our trip was benefitting those at home as well.

“It’s very exciting to think we’ll be returning to this special community and building on our ties there.

“I’d encourage anyone who has thought about taking a trip like this before to come along.”

Teams from Burnley FC in the Community helped to lay the initial foundations of the classroom block back in 2014.

The group then visited again in 2015 when they added moulded bricks and built the classroom walls.

It is hoped that the work will be complete this year in October with the help of new volunteers.

The group said the purpose of the trip is to help the the children of Woe by lending its time, energy and resources.

As well as the project work, the trip will also include an adventure weekend exploring the greenery of the country.

The trip can be paid for directly or via fundraising and costs £1,995.

An information evening is being held about the trip at Turf Moor on Thursday at 7pm.

Volunteers aged under 16 will need to be accompanied by a parent or guardian.
