A FOOD takeaway owner must pay £1,030 after failing to show that his business waste was being disposed of properly.

Zahid Ghani, who ran Franky's, which was formerly based in Parkhills Road, Bury, was visited by environmental health officers in April 2016 and asked to provide his waste transfer notes.

He failed to do so, despite repeated visits, and was issued with a £300 fixed penalty notice.

Ghani did not pay the penalty notice and was prosecuted at Bury Magistrates Court on Tuesday, where he pleaded guilty to an offence under the Environmental Protection Act 1990.

Magistrates fined him £300 and ordered him to pay £700 costs and a £30 victim surcharge.

Councillor Sandra Walmsley, cabinet member for strategic housing and support services, said: “Businesses must be able to demonstrate that they are disposing of their waste legitimately.”
