PEOPLE have spoken of their ‘outrage’ over ‘dreadful’ parking on a busy main road.

Complaints have been made after cars were seen parking on the kerb and double yellow lines ‘at all hours of the day’ in Blackburn Road, Accrington.

Resident Carole Steel said she has become sick of the problems the cars have caused.

She said: “It’s a dreadful problem and it’s like this all the time. It’s illegal and dangerous.

“I’ve seen people just pull up and park on the kerb even when there are free parking spaces right there.

“People can’t get their pushchairs past on the pavement and some of the cars are parked the wrong way, it’s dangerous when they pull back onto the road.

“I’ve had more than 300 people commenting on social media posts about it, people are very concerned.

The mother-of-two said the issues persist on the road from Scaitcliffe Street to Lonsdale Street and that users of a number of takeaways and small shops on the street contribute to the problem.

The latest concerns come after people complained of speeding and road safety problems in Blackburn Road at the end of last year.

Mahfooz Ali, who works at nearby PC Cellular, said parking is a real issue in the street.

He said: “A lot of people have been coming in and having problems with traffic and parking on the roads. If you look around in the area it’s really, really busy.

“More car parking needs to be made available. If people just want to do a quick bit of shopping they have to park on the yellow lines otherwise they’d be stuck driving round. It’s not good for our business.”

Cllr Abdul Khan who represents the Central ward for Hyndburn Council where the problem is prevalent, said it is an issue and action needs to be taken.

He said: “People need to take notice of these problems.

“First of all people shouldn’t be parking there, but if they do, action needs to be taken.”

Lancashire County Council has said studies have not identified any patterns of incidents on the road and parking enforcements are in place.

A spokesman said: “While we cannot monitor all restrictions at all times, we carry out appropriate parking enforcement in Blackburn Road in conjunction with other similar roads in the county.”

“Vehicles are allowed to wait on double yellow lines while loading and unloading, or picking up a passenger, and disabled blue badge holders can park on double yellow lines for up to 3 hours.”
