HUNDREDS of homes in the Ramsbottom area were left without power after an ‘explosion’ was heard by residents.

It is understood that a loud bang heard by locals was caused by a power surge at 4.20pm at an electricity sub-station at the corner of Bridge Street and Eliza Street next to the level crossing at Ramsbottom Station.

One witness wrote on Facebook: "Been a explosion on rail track in Ramsbottom under ground."

Two fire engines are on the scene and the police are redirecting traffic away from Bridge Street.

The traffic lights are out at the Hare and Hounds pub junction in Holcombe Brook.

Electricity North West, which operates the power infrastructure in the region, said it was a "high voltage fault".

A spokeswoman said 838 homes were left without power in and around the village.

Julie Walker said on Facebook: "The left hand side of Bolton Street towards the lights is off, Callender Street, Rostrons Road, Earl Road, Victoria Street, Albert Street all off.

"Can't see any lights across on Major Street and the Springs from ours.

"Not sure how much further it goes.

"The traffic lights in the centre of Rammy were working when I came home."

Tesco's store had to closed but Morrisons remained open.

Electricity was restored to the more than 800 affected homes at around 6.45pm.
