The 26-year-old woman, who the Lancashire Telegraph understands is the baby’s mother, and the 30-year-old man had initially been arrested on suspicion of the concealment of the birth.

An investigation was launched after police received a call from a hospital at 3pm on Monday about a sudden death at the property.

The couple had been released without charge on Tuesday but were re-arrested on suspicion of murder yesterday following the results of a post mortem examination.

Detectives said the baby girl had a number of injuries which required further examination. The exact nature of the baby’s injuries have not been revealed.

The couple remained in police custody last night and were set to be quizzed by detectives this morning.

Work is still being carried out to establish exactly when the baby died but it is thought she had been in the house for a number of days.

Detectives are urging anyone with information to come forward.

Det Chief Insp Jill Johnston, who is leading the investigation, said: “This is a tragic incident involving the death of a newborn baby girl in Burnley.

“My thoughts are with the family and friends of those affected at this sad and distressing time.

“Following extensive enquiries we have re-arrested two people on suspicion of murder.

“This remains a complex investigation and a team of specially trained officers are conducting a number of inquiries

“We are urging anyone who has any information which may assist with our investigation to contact police on 101 quoting log reference 0703 of January 16.”
