AT the age of just 10, Libby Halsall has overcome many challenges and enjoyed many adventures.

And now she has now become a part of an elite band of youngsters to have earned all 57 Brownie Badges.

Libby, who is in the 40th Bolton Brownies Pack, earned her first badge at the age of seven and had to overcome her own fears to complete the set in just three years.

The Year Five St Brendan’s RC pupil said: “I was seven years old when I got my first badge, it was the swimmer badge. Brown Owl made a joke to me that if I did all the Brownies Badges she would give me £20! I joined Brownies in September, 2013, I was almost seven. I did badges almost straight away, as I did a lot of hobbies so I got quite a few straight away as I already had the certificates — for example Swimmer, Swimmer Advanced, Dancer and Sports.”

Badges show that Brownies have learned new things, challenged themselves and tried fun stuff.

They are a special record of a girl’s progress through Brownies along with the new experiences and skills they have gained along the way.

The inspirational youngster from Harwood faced her fears head-on with surprising results. Libby said: “The hardest badge for me to get was the Rider Badge. My mum had asked a friend of hers who had a horse if we could go to the stable and help out, but I wouldn’t do it as I was scared of the horses. But as I got nearer to finishing all of my badges, I thought that I had to do it, so I did and I loved it — and then mithered mum for a horse. But she said no.” She added: “The badge I enjoyed the most was the Watersports one. I had to do at least four sessions of a watersport. My mum booked me on four sessions of canoeing, which I had never done before, I did the four and enjoyed it so much that I carried it on and love it. I go for lessons now on a Sunday night.”

Libby added: “A big thank you goes to Suzanne Spencer, Brown Owl, for all her help and support while completing these badges, many of them would not have been done without her help, for example Camper and First Aid Advanced.”

Libby now says goodbye to her pack in the local Tonge Division as she moves on to becoming a Girl Guide in January. She was awarded a certificate and badge at an awards night hosted by the Lancashire Border County Guiding Team.
