Smoking ban 'will cost businesses thousands'

BUSINESSES could face escalating costs as a result of the smoking ban that starts on July 1.

In particular, the pub trade is set to be hit hard as many landlords who have not already done so face the prospect of putting up smoking shelters or having to pay fines for not complying with legislation.

The warning comes from Blackburn-based law firm Napthens, which believes that on average pubs can expect to spend £10,000 on preparing for the ban while there are going to be cost implications for other businesses.

There are more than 730 pubs, restaurants and hotels in Blackburn, Hyndburn, Darwen and the Ribble Valley that will need to get ready for the ban or they could be hit with fines of hundreds, or even thousands of pounds.

However, Chamber of Trade chiefs have hit out at the claims and said that businesses in the area have been given plenty or warning time to get ready for the change in law.

Naomi Holt, a licensing expert at Napthens, said: "There are many costs that businesses will have to look at, from the legal costs of preparing for the ban to the possibility of having to build exterior shelters to cater for smokers.

"The regulations state that smoking will no longer be permitted inside any public building or work place or, in any structure that consists of a roof and walls which are less than 50 per cent permanently open, even if the structure is outside.

"The few exemptions to the smoking ban are hotels, inns and guesthouses. These premises will be able to designate individual bedrooms as smoking bedrooms but they must be identified on a plan which is available for inspection at any time by the enforcement authorities. All public areas of hotels including lobbies, corridors and stairwells must remain smoke free.

"However, in a pub, bar or restaurant it is simply a case of saying no smoking' and displaying the appropriate signage."

Coun David Cottam, president of Blackburn and District Chamber of trade, said: "I don't go along with the businesses incurring penalties because everyone should have been sent a no smoking pack from the government.

"There could initally be a knock-on affect because of the ban with people not going into pubs but trade will recover when people want a pint."

Not if they sell smokeless tobacco. Toque Tobacco supplies hundreds of businesses all over the world.

The headline is simple commonsense to anybody other than anti-smoking 'experts'.
Will smokers, often the majority of frequent customers, be willing to accept second-rate provision at pub prices and will the non-smokers come out often enough to make up the shortfall? The impending rise of restaurant numbers will flood the market or depend on many non-smokers finding extra disposable income and increase the obesity epidemic.
This law is at best blinkered and inept when freedom to choose with education and encouragement would be acceptable to all.

Really this isn't about business but about the health of the workforce.

What price their health compared to the inconvenience of going outside to smoke?

Business owners have historically never cared for their employees health (the same disregard for health shown by smokers to themselves and those around them).

As ever it has taken a change in law to force them to consider their workers.

Its about time the pubs became smoke free in this country I for one cant wait and yes I am a non smoker but have friends who do smoke and to be honest they cant wait either. One of my local pubs sells excellent food but I wouldnt eat in there with peoples smoke so I am now likely to visit more often As it will be more healthy without the smokey atmosphere I would also now consider having meals out there with my young daughter who shouldnt be subjected to others smoke. Well done on the government for getting something right. I for one (and lots of others) will definitely spend more time out drinking when the smoking ban comes in

David Jones...wake up please. The Government Agency tasked with the health of employees namely the Health & Safety Executive cannot offer any evidence that Second Hand Smoke presents an increase to health.

Sharon, seems you seem so exicted about the ban, why? did you and the other few vocal antis not open your own venues, there has never been a law stopping you. Many non-smokers are tolerant of their freinds and family who smoke.
They also do not believe the propaganda seen on the TV or read in the papers.
Ventilation should have been the way forward to clear the air.
This ban was forced through with a lie.

Just for the record, I will be classed as a criminal on the 1st of JULY, the first time ever in my 51 years on this earth.
Because I am going to Nick Hogans pub in Bolton, who does not agree with this ban either.
There are others also.
Is that why they are letting some of the crims out early to make way for all those smokers who flout this unwanted ban.
smokers to the left- chubblies to the right -make way for perfection

Sorry Bill, 9 out of 10 cases of lung cancer occurs in smokers.

Smoking kills over 200,000 people a year in the UK and also kills over 11,000 non-smokers due to SHS.

Smokers are still free to kill themselves but from next Sunday their diregard for others health will be addressed.

Smokers are indeed a dying breed.

Skin cancer kills quite a lot of people, will we be getting a sunbathing ban soon ? A £75 fixed fine for wearing a vest or shorts ?

David Jones, if you want to have a say please state the facts and not just repeate the lies. LISTEN TO ME..! SHS HAS NEVER AND WILL NEVER KILL ANYONE. if you think differently PROVE IT. they have been trying since 1940 and no one anywhere can, your just repeating the lies and deceite put out by ASH and HMG. this ban will be amened in the next few days because SHS has been proved to be harmless.

David - I fully agree with you. I am also supporting a full alcohol ban in pubs as well as I feel that drinkers are infringing my human rights. Drinkers cause fights, vomit on the street etc and are a social nuisance – yes they do have an effect on the rest of the ‘normal’ non-drinking society. Why do you think the police do not do a nicotine test when they stop you – perhaps as alcohol is far more potent drug . Having said that I also call for a ban on food in pubs – the current obesity problem is spiralling out of control…
