UNSUNG sporting heroes from Bury are being honoured at a special ceremony tomorrow.

The 2016 Greater Manchester Sports Awards celebrate the achievements and sporting success of people from across the area.

Seven groups and individuals from Bury have been shortlisted for the prestigious awards that will be presented to winners from across all 10 local authorities.

The nominees were all winners at the Bury Sports Awards earlier in the year.

Hoping to win club of the year is YWCA Bury Netball Club, the club has been working hard to improve its status and has seen success in league and national finals.

Nominated in the volunteer of the year is Ryan Lewis who is chairman of Bury Broncos Rugby League Club, he gives up a huge amount of time for the development of the club.

Thomas Gleaves, head coach for Radcliffe Junior Water Polo Club, has been nominated for coach of the year and Karen Nichols who is part of Bury Hockey Club has been nominated for unsung hero of the year.

Isaac Taylor Green, an undefeated amateur fighter, is up for sports achiever of the year and Alex Evans is up for changing lifestyles recognition award.

The final nominee is Mark O'Brien who is the captain of the Jigsaw Boccia team, he is up for disabled sports achiever of the year.

Chief executive of GreaterSport Yvonne Harrison commented: "We are really excited for this year's Greater Manchester Sports Awards.

"It is such a rewarding evening, celebrating the achievements and sporting successes of Greater Manchester residents, highlighting the very best of community sport and celebrating the fantastic people behind the scenes.

"Without individuals like these, sport would not be what it is today in Greater Manchester and GreaterSport are passionate we celebrate these individuals."

The awards will be handed out at Old Trafford Cricket Ground on Friday where there will be a host of Olympic and Paralympic stars at the ceremony.
