A REVIEW of whether to alter controversial plans for a leisure centre is under way.

Chiefs in the new ruling coalition of the Conservative, Liberal Democrat, and For Darwen groups said they would report back to Blackburn with Darwen Council's executive board in July.

Coun Michael Law-Riding, executive member for leisure, said he wanted to complete the review into Darwen Leisure Centre as soon as possible to keep delays to a minimum, making sure that costs did not rise. He was tight-lipped about what was being looked at but promised it would be thorough.

But opposition leader, Labour's Kate Hollern, said that she didn't see how the plans could be changed at all.

The £9million scheme attracted vocal opposition to plans to put the sports hall at Darwen Vale High School - which is under construction. Many people said they wanted all the facilities on one site.

The For Darwen party had campaigned for the plans to be changed as it grabbed two seats in last month's elections.

When the coalition took over the council they promised reviews of Darwen's controversial £34million academy, the town's leisure centre, household waste, and traffic systems.

A review of the academy concluded that too much money had already been spent on the scheme, that will end up costing more than £48million, to change it.

Coun Law-Riding said: "We are listening to what people have been telling us in Darwen, what came back through the election campaign, and will see if we can do anything about it."

Coun Kate Hollern said: "It's interesting that we were criticised for not taking long enough to consult people, and they are going to be looking at this in just four weeks."
