AN investigation has been launched after a suspected arson attack on a luxury home.

Eyewitnesses alerted firefighters to the blaze at Lords Hall Farm, at the top of Duckshaw Road, Darwen, at around 5.35pm on Friday.

Some 27 rooms at the property were damaged by either smoke or the fire, which is thought to have been started deliberately, possibly by a burglar.

Firefighters were forced to use water from an indoor swimming pool, nearby, because of supply problems at the remote location.

Darwen watch manager Steve Harrison said an inquiry had been launched: "We are treating it as suspicious because there was more than one seat of fire reported."

Some 16 firefighters from three fire stations - Darwen, Blackburn and Accrington - were involved in tackling the extensive blaze for a number of hours.

Firefighters initially suspected that someone may have been trapped inside the property so they donned breathing apparatus to search the two-storey building.

Thermal imaging cameras were also used but their early fears turned out to be unfounded.

Det Sgt Ian Geogarty, of Darwen CID, said: "We are investigating the possibility that entry has been forced into the premises."

People who may have seen anything suspicious in the Duckshaw Road or Bury Fold Lane area between 4pm and 6pm are being asked to come forward and contact DS Geogarty on 01254 353842.
