fundraisers have been to see how £30,100 they raised in Darwen is being spent on fighting cancer.

Three members of the Darwen committee of Cancer Research UK (CRUK) took part in the annual supporters' conference held by the North West area of the charity at the Paterson Institute for Cancer Research in Withington, Manchester.

Scientists described the work being carried out at the Paterson and they saw examples of research work being done, which is largely funded by cash from CRUK.

Linda Chatburn, 58, chairman of the Darwen committee, attended with colleagues Chris Lawton, 61, of Eccleshill Gardens, and Teresa Marsden of Pothouse Lane.

She said: "This is an amazing amount for a small town and it is even more amazing because we manage to sustain support year in and year out.

"We are truly grateful to everyone who contributes. What we saw at the Paterson only convinced us that we have to go on with fundraising."
