BUILDING owners and their MP tenant are calling for a road traffic sign be removed after it was put up pointing into their premises.

The warning sign says 'unsuitable for HGV access,' with an arrow indicating towards MP Janet Anderson's office in Bacup Road, Waterfoot.

The sign is supposed to warn lorries that they cannot turn into Cowpe Road.

It was put up on Wednesday by Lancashire County Council after initially being placed at the bottom of Cowpe Road itself, which led Mrs Anderson and building owners B & E Boys to question its new location.

But now the council has confirmed that its position is correct, the owners and Mrs Anderson are demanding it be moved.

Peter Boys, of B & E Boys, said the company had not been consulted about the sign; it looked like it was attached to the building, and had not been put up straight.

He added: "There are other places that I think would be far more appropriate and would have less of an impact on our building.

"It is detrimental to our facade and we will be getting in touch with Lancashire County Council as I am sure there is scope to move it."

And Denise Hancock, Mrs Anderson's PA, who is based in the office, said both she and the MP believed little thought had been put into the position of the sign.

She said: "We are most unhappy that it is there.

"It spoils the frontage and there has been no consultation with us or the landlord.

"It could cause access problems for the maintenance of the building and has stopped it from looking like one of Waterfoot's nicest stone buildings."

A spokesperson for Lancashire County Council said: "if the owner of the building approaches us we will of course discuss the matter with them."
