A HEALTH organisation has issued new a series of guidelines to help people avoid getting food poisoning from barbecued food.

To coincide with National Food Safety Week, the Health Protection Agency (HPA) North West is reminding people on how to cook their food safely.

They advise: l Store food properly, keeping cooked and uncooked products separate, with cooked meats always stored on higher shelves than uncooked meats in the refrigerator.

l They warn that food must be fully defrosted and make sure the grill is suitably hot by lighting it well in advance of when you intend to use it.

l Wash your hands well and the HPA advise that raw meats and poultry, including bacon and sausages, are thoroughly cooked.

l Do not attempt to cook roasts or larger joints of meat or poultry on the barbecue, because they will not cook thoroughly.
