BOLTON’S Olympic hero Jason Kenny bought an engagement ring for his fiancée — fellow cycling star Laura Trott — at the soon-to-close Prestons of Bolton store, his mum has revealed.

Lorraine Kenny read the news that the iconic Bolton store is set to close its doors and recalled the moment she accompanied her son as he bought a ring for his soon to be wife.

And Mrs Kenny explained that she thought she was accompanying Jason to buy Laura a Christmas present on the trip to Bolton town centre in December 2014.

She explained: “It wasn’t until we got to the counter that Jason asked to see the engagement rings, I had no idea but I thought it was brilliant.

“The staff member showed him a white gold ring with diamonds in the centre and around the sides and he was very happy with it and went for it.”

She also explained that Jason tricked Laura into thinking she could be getting a cheap ring, before surprising her with the Prestons piece at home on Christmas Day.

She said: “He had been on the internet and was showing Laura a website with cheap engagement rings to wind her up a bit.

“But then he proposed with the real ring on Christmas Day and she was thrilled with it — it was actually a bit too big so it had to be resized, but she really didn’t want to hand it over.”

Lorraine, who lives in Farnworth with husband Michael, said Jason — who now has six gold medals to his name — enjoyed going to Prestons when he was younger as well.

She said: “I think he also bought a watch from there and he really liked the piano in the store — he plays the piano, he taught himself.”

She added: “When I saw the Bolton News article about Prestons closing, he texted back to say he thought it was sad news.”

“it is very sad, it is such a beautiful building inside and out and we need those kind of shops in Bolton.”

It has been a more positive weekend for the town centre and Lorraine attended the hugely successful food festival and enjoyed the many tributes to Jason placed around the town.

She said: “There was a brilliant atmosphere in Bolton over the weekend and it was lovely to see his picture everywhere, I sent him some photos and he enjoyed them.”

“The town is obviously really proud of what Jason has achieved.”
