WITH Big Sam’s first match as England manager coming up at the weekend, we took a look through our files to find some classic grassroots football images.

Lo and behold, no sooner had our search begun than we found a shot of Allardyce alongside fellow former Whites in a team shot of the Bolton Trotters side.

Sam wasn’t the only former pro keeping fit with an amateur team following an illustrious playing career.

We also found a picture of Peter Reid, who had rounded up a group of former Manchester City players to play against the Duke of Wellington pub team in 1992.

Ex-City players were 5-3 victors on a day during which £500 was raised for a new football kit for the Westhoughton branch of the Boys Brigade.

Hindley Green ended the season as the unluckiest team in local football in 1991. Tipped for every honour in the game, they finished runners-up to Park United in the Bolton Combination’s premier cup final, missed out on goal difference for the premier league on the last night of the season, then lost to Eagley at Burnden Park in the Bolton Hospital Cup.
