A MAN suffered serious injuries to his hands when he was attacked and robbed by a gang of balaclava-clad thugs in Blackburn.

The incident happened at the back of the Printers Arms pub, Accrington Road, on Friday between 5.30pm and 6pm.

Police said the 27-year-old victim was walking along a grass verge when he was approached by a gang of four or five men wearing balaclavas.

He was subjected to a vicious assault before the gang made off with a large amount of cash.

The man was taken to Royal Preston Hospital where he is being treated for serious injuries to both his hands.

It is not known what weapon was used to cause the injuries.

Police are investigating and appealing for witnesses to come forward.

Det Insp Joanne Lightbown said: "We have spoken to the victim and have obtained a brief account of what happened.

"He is currently receiving medical treatment at Royal Preston Hospital.

"We are in the very early stages of the inquiry and at this stage we are unsure whether the victim knew the offenders, as they were all wearing balaclavas."
