THERE was plenty of pomp and splendour when young people “graduated” from primary school.

Year Six children at St Peter and St Paul’s RC Primary donned their gowns and threw their caps in the air for a special ceremony celebrating their successes at the school over the years.

The youngsters carried on a school tradition as they attended the end of year ceremony.

Headteacher Trish Grogan said: “All the year six children dress up in their special caps and gowns.

“We do this to show how special our children are and how unique each one is.

“It is a celebration of all their achievements.”

The graduation ceremony was watched by families and pupils throughout the school, which is on the outskirts of Bolton town centre.

Former pupil Michael Smyth, of Swansway Garages, returned to congratulate the school leavers after they had previously visited his business and impressed the chairman of the company with their maturity.

Mrs Grogan said: “He presented the children with their certificates and described the children as exemplary.

“He said he was absolutely pleased to come back to school for the ceremony.”

She added: “The Year Six children have worked hard throughout the year, showed teamwork, sportsmanship and friendship – you can’t buy that.”

Following the ceremony, the new graduates celebrated the success of pupils in other year groups, who were also recognised for their achievements.

Kian Chambers, aged 11, found himself receiving an extra honour.

He said: "I am surprised and happy to be pupil of the year. I never thought I would get such an award.

“I will miss St Peter and St Paul's."

Paulette Caren, also aged 11, added: " I am really sad to be leaving, but I am moving on with lots of good friends."
