He was detained wearing a balaclava and carrying gloves and in possession of a screwdriver but later told police he had been walking his dog at 2am.

Brown, 21, of Belfield Road, Accrington, pleaded guilty to burglary at Safehands Nursery with intent to steal. He was sent on bail to Burnley Crown Court to be sentenced.

Kerry Grieve, prosecuting, said nothing had been stolen but £2,700 worth of damage had been caused at the nursery by forcing doors and filing cabinets.

Brown told police he was walking his dog at 2am when he met two men who asked if he was interested in making some money by helping them out. He said he agreed to act as look-out.

Imran Hussain, defending, said the two other men encouraged his client to take part by acting as look-out.

“He accepts that he knew what he was getting involved in,” said Mr Hussain. “When he saw the blue lights he panicked.”
