BOLTON actress Maxine Peake has issued a rallying cry to urge people to vote for Jeremy Corbyn to remain as leader of the Labour party.

The Westhoughton actress, known for starring roles in shows like Shameless, Dinnerladies and Silk is backing the Islington MP to stay on as leader as he faces a leadership challenge.

Ms Peake appeared alongside Mr Corbyn at a rally and then spoke on a promotional film for the party leader as the deadline for registering to vote in the leadership election nears.

Those who want to vote must register by 5pm today and must pay a charge of £25 to do so.

Anyone who was a member of the Labour Party prior to January 12 this year is already eligible to vote and does not need to register or pay.

The Bolton actress was unequivocal in her support of Mr Corbyn. Speaking directly to potential voters, she said: “I urge you to do this, I understand £25 is a lot of money but in the grand scheme of things, to make this change, to get Jeremy as leader, to get his politics back at the forefront of the Labour Party and get a change in this country, it is a small price to pay.”

She added: “I urge you to look behind the settee and find those pennies, scrape together £25 and vote for Jeremy Corbyn as leader of the Labour party, as future Prime Minister, for a change, for Britain.”

Mr Corbyn is facing challenges from former shadow cabinet members Angela Eagle and Owen Smith.

The winner of the leadership contest will be announced on September 24.
