CHILDREN dressed in their finest clothes as they celebrated Eid.

Gaskell Primary School held a special party for the children to mark the end of Ramadan, the Muslim holy month.

Youngsters enjoyed party food, donated by the parents, and games.

The party was also part of children's learning of other faiths and cultures, with the school holding events to celebrate major festivals including Chinese New Year and Christmas.

Headteacher Emily Gaskell said: "As a multicultural school we look forward to celebrating our families’ different festivals throughout the year, which helps to promote tolerance, mutual respect and an understanding of each other’s faiths and cultures.

"Today our children have learned all about the festival Eid al Fitr and enjoyed celebrating it with lots of dancing, party food and party games."

She added: "The children looked really smart in their clothes. It was a lovely day and the children really enjoyed it."

Children said they enjoyed the celebrations and even learned some traditional dance moves.

Crystal Sandiford, aged 11, said: "I’ve had a very good time celebrating Eid al Fitr with my class. I wore my party clothes to school and enjoyed spending time with my friends - sitting together, eating lots of different types of foods, playing games and dancing."

Hamza Akhtar, aged 10, added: "I have really enjoyed celebrating Eid today at school with my friends. I think that it is really important that we learn about how our friends celebrate their different festivals. The best bit of today was playing lots of party games with my friends and competing against each other to try and win."

Eid celebrations have been taking place across the region, with special events at The Trafford Centre and a weekend of entertainment at Old Trafford Football Stadium.
