AFFORDABLE accommodation is to be built for the town's senior citizens after planning bosses gave a charity the go ahead.

Abbeyfield Bury Society Ltd, which helps older people, got Bury planning committee's permission at a town-hall meeting on Tuesday night to add 11 apartments at its Tottington Road complex to promote independent living.

It means a two-storey extension can be built to the north west of the building and it will house apartments for the over 55s.

Yvonne Creswell, who volunteers for Abbeyfield, told The BUry Times: "More and more people are getting older and some want to downsize but still want to live independently with help and support on site. This is affordable.”

Olly Burrow, of Tottington Road, has formally objected, claiming the apartments would be too tall and stop light getting into his back garden and house.

However, in a report to the committee, planning officer Helen Longworth said: "There would be 22m between the proposed extension and properties on Tottington Road, which would comply with the aspect standards."
