FIREFIGHTERS tackled a blaze at a primary school this evening.

Crews from Farnworth and Eccles were called to Bridgewater Primary School in Little Hulton at 6.41pm.

The fire gutted an outbuilding used to store gardening equipment and damaged the sports hall.

Crews tackled the blaze within 30 minutes but stayed on the scene until 9pm.

The cause of the blaze is being investigated.

Neil Unsworth, Watch Manager at Farnworth Fire Station said: "The windows of the sports hall were damaged and we had to cut away a small part of the roof."

Posts on social media suggest that the school will be closed tomorrow.

Walkden Community posted on Twitter: "We have just had an inbox asking to let parents of Bridgewater Primary School that the school is closed tomorrow as it is unsafe."

But the school declined to confirm whether this was the case.
