FORMER pupils and teachers are invited to go back to class as Turton School holds its biggest reunion in its 62-year-history.

The school in Bromley Cross has won a Big Lottery funding to stage its Griffin Has Landed reunion — reflecting the school crest — event which brings together for the first time those who have attended the school through the decades.

Former headteachers including Frank Viggon and John Porteous will be among the guests which include former pupils who are flying in from across the world to attend the event.

The school, which opened its doors on 1954 is now one of the most popular in Bolton, often oversubscribed.

When it opened Turton School was highlighted as the model for schools with its modern conveniences, including central heating and properly equipped out classrooms.

The idea of the reunion, to be held on July 9, was the idea of Sharon Wyre from the school, who is leading the alumni heritage group.

The grant has been awarded to celebrate the community the school has engendered throughout the village.

Mrs Wyre said: “The school is a focal point of the community, with children who live in the community going to the school, and families moving in because of the school.

“We have had generations of the same family attending the school, with pupils telling me their grandmother came her.

“This is going to be a massive reunion for all those who have attended throughout the decades.

“Already we have had 400 people respond and want to get in touch with as many possible and let those who have moved out of the and creating lasting links with former pupils.

Turton School alumni include Justin Chadwick, actor and director, whose credits include The Other Boleyn Girl, chef Paul Heathcote and actress Sammy Winward.

The reunion will start at noon, and there will be tours of the school, led by current students, entertainment, refreshments with more attractions still being planned.

Mrs Wyre said: “We have former students coming from America, Malaysia, from all over.

“We have a Facebook page called Turton Alumni where people have been sharing pictures of the school and there are details on how to book tickets.”

She urged people to get in touch to meet old friends and share school days memories.
