PLANS for a new leisure centre in Horwich have been changed to include double the number of spectator seats.

Bolton Council has amended proposals for the flagship new centre after concerns were raised from users and swimming clubs about poolside seating.

It had originally been planned to locate 52 spectator seats at the pool, but this number has now been increased to 102.

The revised plans will also include two dedicated wheelchair spaces, seats for competing teams and an area of space surrounding the pool.

The council, which will hand over running of the centre to the Bolton Community Leisure Trust, said its plans for the £10 million centre are “constantly evolving”.

A spokesman for the council and the trust said: “Following meetings with the local swimming club and the ASA, we have revised the plans for the swimming pool at the new leisure centre, to ensure that the pool can be used for galas and competitive swimming.

“The revised plans will include 102 spectator seats, two dedicated wheelchair spaces, competitor seating, a pool surround of 2m on all sides and 4m at the deep end.

“This will satisfy the ASA requirements for galas and allow the pool to be used for swimming competitions and events.”

The changes have been welcomed by Horwich and Blackrod Cllr Ann Cunliffe, who said: “It is great to have this new Leisure Centre in the heart of Horwich. It is huge asset and people come from far and wide to use the facilities.”

“We have been constantly reworking the plans in consultation with parents and users so that we could get the best possible outcome and I am pleased we can now move forward with building the new centre which will benefit many more generations to come.”

As well as the 25-metre, six-lane pool with a separate training pool, the new centre, which will be built on the current facility's car park, will also include a 100-station fitness suite, spin and dance studios, a four court sports hall, changing facilities and new car parking.

Plans are also being prepared for a flagship new health centre to be built opposite the leisure complex.

The leisure centre plans will be considered for approval at the Planning Committee on the May 12.
