BOSSES of a popular town-centre bar could discover tomorrow if their licence to sell alcohol is to be withdrawn.

Pics Bar, in Market Street, Bury, is currently licensed to sell booze daily from 11am to 4am and play music during the same hours.

However, Greater Manchester Police wants Bury licensing panel to revoke the licence for the bar, now known as Lounge Bar.

A council report says that, if the panel decides not to withdraw the licence, it should remove the current designated premises supervisor, Alexandra Clarke, from the licence, change the security staff or reduce the opening hours so it closes at 12.30am daily.

The report adds: "Three representations have been received from interested parties. The grounds of their representations (relate to) crime and disorder, door staff out of control, (claims that there is) no need for the venue to be open until 4am and drug dealing inside the premises."

A spokesman for the bar said they would contest the review. He added: "In five years of trading we have hardly had any incidents at the venue. We assisted Bury Council in obtaining Purple Flag status for the area and indeed paid much of the cost to do so. We actively participate in Pubwatch and feel let down by the actions of Greater Manchester Police."

A source with close links to the bar added: "The door staff are professional and work in a difficult environment.

"It is very easy for the police to say they are out of control and link the bar with incidents, but just because something happens outside, it doesn't mean there is a link to the bar."

The licensing panel will meet at the town hall at 1.30pm tomorrow to consider the request.

Two weeks ago, the Bury Times reported that police were appealing for the public's help in tracing four people in connection with attacks on four people in Market Street.

Police said two men and two women were thrown out of Lounge Bar before the attack.

One of the victims was a 60-year-old street pastor. She was checked out at the scene and did not suffer any lasting damage.

In January, a 30-year-old man was in the bar when a fight broke out near to where he was standing.

As he tried to calm the situation, he was dragged outside and brutally beaten, suffering serious head injuries.

His recovery is ongoing.
