AS work begins on a £3 million scheme to revamp one of Bolton’s main shopping streets, we take a look back over the past 100 years.
Once upon a time Newport Street was known as "shoe shop street" because of the large number of footwear shops it boasted.
Grey elephant sculptures stood in the street since the early 1980s but were replaced with a family of three brightly coloured ones in 2007.
They have since been moved to make way for the revamp which will get under way in the coming weeks.
