BOLTON’S Conservative MP Chris Green said a new draft deal on the UK’s membership with the European Union will not be enough to make him vote to stay in the union.

Prime Minister David Cameron has presented his renegotiation with EU chiefs to MPs and believes it offers enough change to convince people to vote ‘in’ when a referendum is held.

Mr Cameron said more details needs to be ironed out before a key summit later this month and while new Bolton West MP Mr Green said he remains open minded about his own decision — major changes will have to take place to convince him to vote to stay in.

He said: “I haven’t made my mind up yet and will wait for the final negotiation but it is not looking promising.

“I have always said that it is the European Union needs to fundamentally be willing to change and at the moment it looks like it is trying to do the minimum possible.”

The draft deal includes an 'emergency brake' on migrant benefits — which means that Mr Cameron’s plan to ban in-work benefits for EU migrant workers could come into force straight away following an ‘in’ vote in the referendum — but this would have to be agreed by other member states.

Other measures in the deal include a new way for member states to join together to block some new EU laws as well as measures relating to protection for non-euro countries in the EU — such as the UK.

Mr Green said: “I think the draft deal is decidedly problematic for someone who would like to vote in in the referendum.

“I will be pleasantly surprised if they start making progress now but as things stand this is not enough to make me vote yes.”

He added: “I think the EU is taking the British people for granted when they should be listening to their legitimate concerns.”

Both of Bolton’s Labour MPs believe the country should stay in the EU but believe Mr Cameron has misled the country.

David Crausby, MP for Bolton North East, said: “I think the whole thing has been a fraud — David Cameron only promised this referendum because he was worried about the threat of UKIP at the General Election."

Bolton South East MP Yasmin Qureshi added: “He hasn’t achieved anything and what little he has is isn’t worth anything as it still has to be agreed by other members — it is like the emperor’s new clothes.”
