THE historic place of Bolton within the county of Lancashire was recognised with a short ceremony.

Cllr John Walsh marked Lancashire Day by presenting a red rose to Mayor Carole Swarbrick in Victoria Square.

The annual event commemorates the day in 1925 when Lancashire first sent representatives to Parliament and was launched in 1996 by the Friends of Real Lancashire group.

As part of the ceremony, Cllr Walsh recited the Lancashire Day proclamation speech.

The Astley Bridge Councillor said he feels it is important to note the proud tradition that Bolton has as part of Lancashire.

He said: “We have a long and proud history as part of this country and we should not cast that aside lightly.

“It is important to inform the younger generations of that tradition as well.”
