A GRANDMOTHER, who lost her husband to cancer and is now watching a close friend fight the disease, had her head shaved to raise more than £2,000.

Mother-of-three Tina Horn had her locks cut off on Sunday, August 30, in a show of solidarity for friend Deborah Barber who was diagnosed with breast cancer and has lost all her hair.

Mrs Horn’s goal was to raise awareness and £1,000 for Macmillan Cancer Support, but the ambitious grandmother has doubled her target - raising £2,091.31.

The 64-year-old, of Redvales, Bury, has spent the last 10 years ‘giving back’ to Macmillan by holding various fundraising events each year to thank the charity for supporting her late husband Kevin.

She said: “People kept telling me I was brave but the really brave ones are those who are fighting cancer. It is only hair and it will grow back within a few months.”

Friends were able to donate a pound to cut a chunk of Mrs Horn’s hair off at Whitefield Conservative Club, in Elm Street, Whitefield, before a hairdresser completed the shave.

A fun day was held at the club, which is ran by Mrs Horn's son Stephen, and included a DJ, barbecue and raffle, which also added to the funds raised.

“Everything was donated including the burgers, buns and salad. It could not have happened without the generosity of the people and businesses who contributed,” added Mrs Horn.

“The bar staff and DJ at the club gave up their time for us and I am so grateful.

“People don’t realise just how much Macmillan do, they are amazing.

“I try to raise as much awareness about Macmillan’s work as I can. They help people in as many ways as they can, not everyone realises it.

“The money we raised is enough to pay for 10 nurses care.”
