A HOUSE was set on fire in a suspected arson attack in Deane.

The end-terrace property, which was unoccupied, was left with extensive damage to the ground floor.

Fire crews rushed to Hulton Lane at about 5.55pm yesterday, after residents had seen smoke billowing from the building.

When they got there they found a fire in the front room of the house, which had originated from underneath the stairs near the gas and electricity meters.

They believe a lit item was placed there, enabling the fire to start.

The front door had been forced and there was evidence of someone having squatted inside, although no one was there when crews arrived and nobody was hurt.

Watch manager Karsten Boyle said: "We noticed that the door had been forced and discovered the fire in the front room.

"We believe it was deliberate as someone has forced their way in.

"It has caused extensive damage to the ground floor and the rest of the property is heavily smoke-logged."

Crews removed lots of charred furniture and other household items, using breathing apparatus to avoid being affected by the smoke.

The incident was referred to the police, and the gas and electricity supplies were also asked to attend the make the area safe.
