A SUSPECTED hit-and-run left a 30-year-old man in hospital with a serious leg injury.

The pedestrian was struck by a car in Spa Road on Monday night at about 10.15pm.

He was left unconscious in the road, according to eyewitnesses, and police said he suffered a "serious leg injury".

The driver of the car fled the scene before paramedics and the police arrived.

Police did not have a description for the car, although one witness said a taxi driver who saw the collision said the pedestrian was hit by a red car.

The passer-by, who asked not to be named, said: "We got there and the man was on the floor. He was on the floor for 20 minutes while we were there and did not move in that time.

"I could see blood on the floor. It looked bad really.

"I went up to a taxi driver nearby. He was on the phone, trying to call the police and ambulance.

"He said this guy had driven off after running over this man."

A police spokesman said: "We were called at about 10.15pm. A 30-year-old man had been walking along Spa Road, close to Atria House, when he was involved in a collision with a motor vehicle.

"The driver of the car failed to stop. The pedestrian suffered a serious leg injury and was taken to hospital where his condition was described as stable."
