A 41-year-old man attacked his 15-year-old stepson after the boy called him an offensive name, a court was told.

Blackburn magistrates heard that Steven Grant Hamer had been drinking at the time of the assault which he claimed had been provoked by the boy's behaviour.

But Jonathan Taylor, defending, said his client hoped to be able to sit down with his wife and her children to resolve matters.

"He is deeply remorseful and desperate to put this behind them as a family," said Mr Taylor.

Hamer, of Aster Chase, Lower Darwen, pleaded guilty to assault. He was fined £300 and ordered to pay £80 costs.

John Wood, prosecuting, said the boy felt he was being teased about a rash on his back that had kept him off school that day. He called Hamer a name and as he walked away he was grabbed by the arm and punched on the head by Hamer, he said.
