PEOPLE living near the scene of the crash have long been calling for speed restrictions in Mellor Lane.

The road has seen five accidents - two classed as serious - in the last six years and residents and councillors have expressed concerns over safety on the road.

The men were in a Honda Civic Type R hatchback, which is Honda's sports car with a 2.0-litre engine.

Coun Chris Holtom, county councillor for Ribble Valley South West, said: "Mellor Lane is often a misused road.

"There's evidence of speeding cars going along a road that wasn't really built for speed and there's always cars parked on both sides.

"There have been plenty of complaints about that road. Councillors and residents want lower speeds, they want traffic calming and police patrols.

"I support the Telegraph's campaign and I think my colleagues at Lancashire County Council support it.

"I intend to raise the accident as an example of why we have got to revisit the road and look at any adjustments we need."

A Lancashire County Council spokesperson said they would look at reducing the 60mph speed limit if the investigation found speed to be the cause of the crash.
