DESCENDANTS of an Australian soldier who died in Darwen shortly after the First World War are being sought by the Royal British Legion.

The Darwen branch of the legion have long been intrigued by the story of Ernest Ward and after getting new information on him are keen to build up their knowledge of the soldier who was buried in the town with full military honours.

Bryan Thompson, president of the Darwen branch, recently got hold of Mr Ward's full military record from Australia which is being passed around to interested members of the legion.

Mr Ward died on December 1, 1918, at his uncle's home in the Spring Vale area. A letter sent to Mr Ward's family reveals he was cared for by cousin Nora Leach and uncle Fred Leach.

Mr Thompson said: "I asked about and contacted a couple of Leachs but they were the wrong Leachs.

"I wonder if any relatives of his are still about. It's created so much interest among legion members I wonder if they are aware of the connection."

Any descendants should call Mr Thompson on 01254 260981.
