A 21 year old Darwen man talked his way into trouble after being stopped by police responding to a report of a car being driven on the moors.

Blackburn magistrates heard that Francis Mark Rice was the driver of the car and instead of answering questions told the officers to get on with their job.

He was warned about his language, responded with more abuse and was arrested And it was only when officers physically removed him from the van at the police station that they smelled alcohol and breathalysed him.

Rice, of Olive Lane, pleaded guilty to using threatening behaviour. He was fined £300 with £65 costs and banned from driving for 12 months.

Neil White, prosecuting, said he refused to get out of the van when it arrived at Greenbank police station.

"During the struggle that followed police noticed his breath smelled strongly of alcohol," said Mr White. "Had he co-operated at the scene they may well not have noticed."

Clare Knight, defending, said Rice apologised for the his behaviour and the language he used.
