AN English springer spaniel who was locked in a cage and mistreated by his former owner has emerged as top dog in the Bury Times Pet Idol competition.
Rescue dog Bobby was voted as the overall winner of the competition after readers were asked to select their favourite animal from hundreds of photographs.
Bobby belongs to Mrs Barbara Lynch-Cowdrey and her husband Paul, of Brookfield Road, Walmersley.
The couple are trustees of an English springer spaniel rescue organisation and over the years have fostered more than 100 such dogs prior to the animals finding new and loving homes.
Paul said: "Bobby is aged 14 and came to us about five years ago. He is a rescue dog.
"He's one of eight dogs we've got at the moment and he's the pack leader as well as being the oldest.
"Bobby had been abused and kept in a cage with his brother and later we took them both in. But sadly, Bobby's brother died while undergoing an operation.
"Bobby has quite a good temperament and is so laid back. Because he's pack leader, all the other dogs look up to him. He's number one."
Thanks to being voted the overall Pet Idol winner, Bobby has won for his owners a prize of a three-night weekend or four-night midweek self-catering break for a family of four at any of the 34 Haven Holiday Parks. The prize also includes a trophy, vouchers and a pet portrait, courtesy of the Bury Times.
All creatures great and small featured in the competition and readers were asked to vote for their favourite pet in each of the categories. Section winners will also get a trophy, vouchers and a pet portrait.
More than 1,000 votes were registered during the Pet Idol competition.
