A TEA party in a town centre building society raised £60 to help cancer patients.

Staff at Yorkshire Building Society in Mealhouse Lane served customers cream teas to mark a successful year of fundraising, which has seen the branch raise £780 for Marie Curie in the last year.

In June 2014 Yorkshire Building Society launched its Hour of Need campaign to raise funds for the charity, which has raised £300,000 nationally to date.

Julie Rawlings, manager of the Bolton Yorkshire Building Society branch, said: “We had a lovely day with our customers serving up cream teas and raising money for the Hour of Need campaign.

“This is the Society’s most successful ever fundraising initiative and I just want to say a massive thanks to everybody who has donated and helped us to raise £300,000 for Marie Curie.”

Colleagues at the Bolton branch are now set to take part in a bungee jump at Salford Quays on July 12 to raise more money for the campaign.

Yorkshire Building Society staff also held tea parties across the society’s main offices in Bradford, Leeds, Peterborough and Cheltenham on June 25 – setting a new Guinness World Records title for the largest cream tea party in multiple venues.

Andy Caton, executive director at Yorkshire Building Society, said: “We do love a cream tea in Yorkshire, so we are extremely proud to have set a new Guinness World Records title for such an amazing cause in Marie Curie.

“Through our Hour of Need campaign we are having a real impact in providing more nursing hours for terminally ill people and their families.”
