A REVEREND flew on a wing and a prayer when he took on the world's fastest zip wire challenge.

Rev Alan Saunders — the curate at St Peter's Church in Halliwell — took the leap of faith at Penrhyn Quarry in the shadows of Snowdonia in Wales.

Brave participants reach speeds of more than 100mph on what is the largest zip wire in the northern hemisphere measuring just over one mile.

Rev Saunders said: "It was absolutely terrifying but such an exhilarating experience at the same time.

"It was just unbelievable. All the church were praying for me.

"I think we all have a bit of a fear of heights in us and it was very high up.

"It was the closest thing to flying without being a bird.

"When I was on it I just hoping the wire didn't snap and trying to yell out with excitement but at that speed it just took my breath away."

Rev Saunders took on the zip wire with three members of his congregation — Matt Wilson, Shirley Clarke and Margaret Collier.

The challenge came about after couple Kath and David Richardson who run Good News for Romania, asked for the help of the church to raise money for people living in extreme poverty in Romania.

The sponsorship money will help the Richardsons buy a trailer and tow bar in order to take Romanian families out on mini bus trips.

Mrs Davidson, who adopted daughter Madi and brought her to the UK from Romania, said: "It's wonderful what they did for the charity.

"Alan is just brilliant he is just so full of life and so supportive.

"Last year I did the zip wire challenge, which was terrifying, and raised enough money to buy a mini bus so this year we really wanted to raise money for a tow bar and trailer so that we can put all the camping equipment in it because we take Romanian families on a holiday each year.

"Our co-workers who are out in Romania are absolutely delighted with the love and support from the church.

"It is such an encouragement for them."

The Richardsons are now holding a bring and buy coffee morning to add to their funds for Good News for Romania at their home on June 13.
