BOLTON Samaritans hosted a glitzy dinner and dance event to celebrate 50 years of listening to the needy and vulnerable in the borough.

Samaritans volunteers and supporters danced the night away on Saturday May 2, along with special guests included the Mayor of Bolton, Councillor Martin Donaghy, who presented special long service awards to three volunteers who have been with Bolton Samaritans for more than 24 years.

The longest-serving volunteer has achieved 44 years of listening at the branch.

The Mayor of Blackrod and the Mayor and Mayoress of Westhoughton were also in attendance at the event, held at Bolton School Arts and Conference Centre.

Those who attended enjoyed a drinks reception sponsored by Bolton School, a three course meal and dancing to live band The Accused.

Anna Knights, Branch Publicity Officer and support volunteer at Bolton Samaritans said: "There was a lovely atmosphere, and it was great to see so many of our volunteers dressed up and having fun."

The awards were financed by the Claire Squires Fund which was set up in memory of Claire Squires, who died aged 30 while running the London Marathon in 2012 for the charity.

Alison Perkins, director and listening volunteer, said: "I am pleased this milestone has fallen during my time as director, as it is my pleasure and a great honour to host such an important event."
