THE hotspots where motorists are snapped most frequently by speed cameras in Bolton have been revealed.

Drivers were caught speeding on the southbound carriageway of the A666 at the Raikes Lane bridge 1,151 times between April 1 and March 31 last year, figures show.

This represents an average of more than three speeding tickets a day being issued.

The speed camera on St Peter’s Way, which is a 50mph limit, is 12th in a list of the top 20 speeding ticket hotspots across Greater Manchester.

In second across Bolton with 1,006 drivers being caught out during the same time period is the on the M61 southbound at Farnworth.

Then there is a slight drop to third, with 494 drivers being snapped on Manchester Road in Kearsley, at the junction with Teak Drive.

This is followed by 359 drivers being caught speeding on Crompton Way, near Seymour Road.

Completing Bolton’s top five hotspots is the camera at Plodder Lane, near Slack Fold Lane in Great Lever, which has snapped 345 drivers over the 12 month period.

The most prolific speed camera across Greater Manchester was in Stockport, at junction 25 of the M60 clockwise, with 9,245 speeding offences being recorded.

The data was revealed requests to Greater Manchester Police through the Freedom of Information Act.

The speed camera at St Peter’s Way was also the most prolific in Bolton in the 12 months from April 1, 2012 to March 31, 2013, but there were 1,484 speeding offences recorded in that time.

Jonathan Allbones, director of the Car People, which uncovered the figures, said: "From our research into Greater Manchester's speeding ticket hotspots, we discovered that there have been over half a million speeding offences recorded in the region during the last five years, an average of 110,000 a year.

“Somewhat surprisingly, we actually found that there has been a decline in the number of speeding tickets issued during this period."

It was recently revealed that more than £300,000 worth of speeding fines had been handed out to motorists flouting the 50mph limit on an 17 mile stretch of the motorway where work to create a ‘smart motorway’ is being carried out, working out at 3,130 fixed penalty notices in total.
