Prolific criminal caught again - stealing booze from Morrisons

ONE of Bolton's most prolific criminals has been caught again.

Harry Hankinson was caught wandering through the self check-outs at Morrisons in Blackhorse Street, cradling a bottle of Glenfiddich whisky.

The 63-year-old, who has racked up more than 500 convictions, stole several bottles of whisky and vodka, worth £79.07 in total, from the store on March 26.

The theft saw Hankinson, of Kingsley Street, Halliwell, breach an anti-social behaviour order banning him from Bolton town centre, and committing an offence while subject to a 12-month conditional discharge.

Security staff at Morrisons found Hankinson had several other bottles of spirits under his coat, and he was arrested.

Last year he was finally jailed after his 521st offence, 426 of which are theft-related.

Hankinson had embarked on a shoplifting spree in which he attempted to steal a designer watch, purses and a handbag from Selfridges in Manchester, as well trying to steal alcohol from Aldi and Tesco, and meat from Sainsbury's.

After magistrates bailed him, he was arrested the next day after being caught with £335 of perfume at House of Fraser in Manchester.

Defence barrister Robert Elias told the court then that Hankinson's offending started after a head injury in the 1970s and that his client had told him that doctors suggested there may be a link between that injury and his compulsion to steal, but there was nothing concrete.
