SPECIAL effects students won the praise of Hollywood's greatest make-up artists at a top UK trade event for professionals in their industry.

The University of Bolton students showcased their skills to top professionals at the United Make-up Artists Expo, demonstrating at the United Make-up Artists Expo (UMAe) why it has UK-leading SFX courses.

Richard McEvoy Crompton, SFX course leader said he was delighted by the student's work.

He said: "These events give us an opportunity to show off our soon to be graduates on a world stage.

"This year we were visited on our stand by make-up artist Kenny Myers, noted for his work on X-Men, who said that our students showed a highly polished and professional portfolio of work."

Held in London, UMAe is the UK's leading aspiring and professional hair and make-up artist trade show attracting the biggest names in the industry.

The university’s special effects for film and TV course hosted a stand at the two-day exhibition, showcasing current students’ work through live demonstrations.

The event allowed undergraduate students to speak and network with industry stars about work opportunities and exhibit their portfolios.

Guest speakers at UMAe included three-time Academy Award winner Greg Cannom, noted for his work on Mrs Doubtfire and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, as well as recent BAFTA nominee Kristyan Mallett who worked on the Harry Potter series.

Final year student Kate Bagshaw said: "Meeting people like Greg Cannom and Kenny Myers is one of the best parts of going to events like UMAe.

"They took a look at my portfolio and gave me some brilliant feedback that has been really helpful to my work."

Students also had the opportunity to attend various live demonstrations.

Last year, Neill Gorton, the man behind everything from the Sontarans to the Cybermen offered University of Bolton student Julian Griffiths a work placement over the Easter holiday.
