A MAN faces jail for his part in a dramatic car chase through the streets of Burnley.

Mark Devlin, 39, of Dunoon Street in the town, admitted being behind the wheel of a stolen Vauxhall Zafira which smashed into a utility box before being boxed in by police officers in Accrington Road on Tuesday.

Devlin, who has a number of previous convictions, pleaded guilty to aggravated vehicle taking and was sent on bail to Burnley Crown Court, where he will be sentenced on Monday, June 8.

His passenger, Stephen Starkie, 42, of Coal Clough Lane, Burnley, pleaded guilty to allowing himself to be carried in a stolen vehicle.

Starkie was given a community order and was ordered to pay £85 costs, a £60 victim surcharge, and a new criminal court charge of £150.

The pair’s arrest was captured on camera by American television star Jesse McClure, who was travelling through the town at lunchtime on Tuesday. The Storage Hunters star grabbed his phone and filmed officers boxing in the car and hauling Devlin and Starkie away.

He uploaded the 92-second clip to website YouTube and told users he got to see the “mean streets of Burnley” on his way to visit Scott Dawson Advertising in Billington Road.

Starkie could clearly be heard screaming over the sound of sirens as police dog Nooshka bit him.

Jesse said the officers’ actions were justified and appropriate. He told the Lancashire Telegraph: “It was handled in an appropriate fashion, so massive props to the British police on that one.”

Jesse was later given a guided tour of Lancashire Constabulary’s Greenbank headquarters by the officers he had filmed. They signed a traditional bobby’s helmet for him.
