FORMER Blackburn Rovers star Kevin Gallacher has appeared in court accused of having a dog dangerously out of control.

His golden retriever, Baxter, is alleged to have bitten a seven-year-old girl on the face and head while it was in the beer garden of a Ribble Valley pub.

The girl needed hospital treatment and subsequently underwent plastic surgery after an incident at The Bonny Inn in Ribchester Road, Salesbury, on September 28 last year.

Gallacher, of Ribchester Road, Clayton-le-Dale, pleaded not guilty to the charge.

He was remanded on bail until the trial on July 7, when an animal behaviour expert will be among the defence witnesses.

Ex-Scotland international Gallacher, 48, won the Premier League title with Rovers in 1995 and is currently director of football at AFC Darwen.

He started his career with Dundee United and went on to also play for Coventry City and Newcastle United, as well as Preston, Sheffield Wednesday and Huddersfield. He made 53 appearances for Scotland, scoring nine goals.
