POLICE have seized a vehicle believed to have been involved in an alleged hit-and-run which left a 26-year-old man fighting for his life.

Zahid Hussain suffered serious head injuries in an incident in Shearwater Drive, Blackburn, on Saturday evening.

The silver Volkswagen Golf, which has a 56 registration number plate, was recovered by police at 5.30pm on Sunday in Percival Street, Blackburn.

Police said Zahid had been involved in a row with two other men shortly before he was struck by the vehicle at around 6.25pm.

Mr Hussain remains in a critical condition in the intensive care unit at Royal Blackburn Hospital.

Police have interviewed a number of witness and are looking for a local man in connection with the incident.

Police initially thought he had been attacked. However it later emerged his injuries were caused by the car.

Tyre marks were found in the grass on the corner of Shearwater Drive and Brookhouse Lane.

Police said the incident is not being treated as attempted murder.

Det Insp Paul Withers of Blackburn CID said: "It is being treated as a road accident at this stage. The driver, who we believe was the only person in the car, may have panicked and driven off without stopping.

"We are not 100 per cent sure what the altercation was about - however there was no personal vendetta against him."

DI Withers added: "We are currently appealing to trace a local male from Whalley Range in connection with this offence.

"I would appeal to him to surrender himself to the police and to anybody with any information as to what's happened to contact us."

Anyone with information should contact Blackburn police on 01254 51212 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
