FIREFIGHTERS in Burnley rolled up their sleeves to raise more than £600 for the Fire Services National Benevolent Fund.

Crew members at the Belvedere Road station spent five hours washing cars on Saturday, as part of a fund-raising event held by fire stations across the country.

Crew manager Gary Hargreaves said: "About a dozen of us took part in it, and it went well. We had a steady stream of cars all day, from 10am to 3pm. I don't know how many cars we got through, but we raised £650 which we're pleased with."

The benevolent fund is the charity for the UK's fire community, which supports firefighters who have been injured, or who have retired, and their families. It offers therapy and recuperation alongside other services.
