A MAN left with a fractured skull after being assaulted outside his home was hit with a golf club, police have revealed.

Detectives in Burnley today appealed for information after the 35-year-old man was attacked in Caernarvon Avenue, Burnley.

Police said the man was arguing with his wife at shortly before 1.30am on Sunday when an unknown man intervened.

An altercation then took place between the two men during which the husband is believed to have been struck with a golf club.

Officers found the head of the golf club at the scene but the shaft is still missing.

This is described as chrome with a black rubber grip.

The victim was taken to Burnley General Hospital where he is still receiving treatment for a fractured skull and significant bruising to his face and body.

He is said to be comfortable.

A number of houses were cordoned off yesterday as officers carried out forensic examinations at the scene but the road remained open.

Police said they are looking into who called them and want any witnesses to come forward.

Acting Det Insp Graham Gallagher said: "A man was found outside the house.

"Neighbours may have found him and we are making enquiries into this."

"The male sustained head injuries and is now in a critical condition in hospital.

"We are looking for the offender and don't know who has done this or why."

A resident of the street, who wished to remain anonymous, said she was with the injured man after he was found.

She said: "I was with him last night and he was moaning but he couldn't say anything."

Another, Vicky Gillet, 30, said: "There's lots of blood on the floor and splashed over the car, you could see it from the upstairs window."
