A MAN has been remanded in custody charged with murder after the body of his former partner was found under paving slabs in a cellar.

Frederick Lawlor, 53, is accused of killing Dorothy Carre, who went missing from her home in Bacup nearly eight years ago.

Rochdale magistrates remanded him until June 5.

Detectives found her body after they received intelligence and searched a house in Equitable Street, Rochdale, on March 12.

Mrs Carre was last seen in March 1999 when she moved from her home in Bacup to Rochdale.

In January last year her family, who had not been in contact with her for several years after the relationship broke down, reported her missing.

Police said Mrs Carre's benefits had not been claimed since 2000.

A post mortem Mrs Carre died as a result of stab wounds.
